Okinawa New Year's Events

In Okinawa, New Year's is celebrated twice in January.
In addition to January 1st (the New Year's Day of the Gregorian calendar), which is celebrated nationwide, the Lunar New Year (Sogwacchi, February 17th in 2026) is also an important event for the people of the prefecture.

During the New Year, Okinawans enjoy dishes served in jubako (tiered boxes), including pork dishes, kombu (kelp), and dishes made with kamaboko (fish cake), as well as Nakamijiru and Inamuduchi. Unlike other prefectures, there is no custom of eating Osechi-ryori (traditional New Year's dishes) or Ozoni (soup with mochi), and Zenzai (Amagashi) is mainly a summer dessert in Okinawa.

Also, on December 31st of the Gregorian calendar, people eat "Toshikoshi Soba" (New Year's Eve noodles), just like in other prefectures.
However, this "Toshikoshi Soba" is not made with buckwheat flour like the soba in other prefectures; it is "Okinawa Soba". This is a relatively new custom, dating back to 1972 after Okinawa's return to Japan.
